HISTORY RESEARCH

-In early 1877 a small ship set sail and reportedly was missing, until the remains of an unidentified wreck were found near Lorne and throughout the Ocean Grove after some floating spars at Louttit Bay attracted attention and what was thought to be a hull was sighted floating bottom up off Mount St. George. "There was some excitement in October 1877 when unidentified wreckage came ashore at several locations. Fishermen found wreckage at Mount St George near Lorne; a portion of deck 40 feet long by 27 feet wide, with deck house attached was washed high on the beach west of Apollo Bay and the side of a ship about 40 feet in length came ashore at Castle Cove west of Cape Otway. None of it was ever identified" (Loney, 1989: 42) refer to national shipwreck database.
